ESPN's new "angle"

Post by robertduke32 » February 15th, 2011, 7:21 pm

So I'm watching the Wildkittens of Kentucky (can't spell suck without UK) and ESPN is showing the game primarily from a camera positioned under the scoreboard above the jump circle. What do you guys think? Personally, I hate it....

I hate the gimmicky camera shots. Just show me the game like I'm sitting in the stands, please.

It gives me a headache, watching from the sky. Do they think I'm dead and want to watch from heaven?

They must've hired directors from our game on Sunday.

I agree with the preceding. These awful gimmicks for the sake of gimmickry are, well, awful.
I took a look at the game in question just to see what it was like, and I am very glad it wasn't a game I care about.
That said, I fully expect ESPN to deface at least one of our games in like fashion before the end of the season. ~X(

I think they plan on isolating on Nolan Smith tonight. Not sure how that will work. They put a mic on a ref for last night's OSU-MSU game.

If they do that tonight, he better not stand to close to Coach K. :-ss

If you attended any of the Atlanta Public Schools during the 1990s, then you definitely get that.
Apropos of the above, when Rolvix posted on Facebook earlier about how excited he is that Ludacris is coming to Duke, I was sore tempted to condescendingly respond about how he came to my high school back when he was still Cris Lova Lova (true story).

Meanwhile, back on the topic...
I didn't see the scoreboard-cam but the iso cam/split shit is just that...shit. They have it for catching players for highlight excerpts but in the live action viewing, it's stupid. "Ahh...he's moving left. Ahh...he's backing up. What the Hell did he pass off for? He was open. Ohhh...it was an alley-oop. I couldn't see that. Stupid shit iso-cam."

You need to see the whole picture, and all this does, is shrink the screen. X(

All of the "fancy" camera angles sucks for live-action. They have some value for instant replays and I like it when they can focus in on a player or specific play, other than that they're pretty lame. The Nolan-cam last night was horrible. I love Nolan, but I don't want to watch him isolated on the side of my television taking up space where the game could be viewed.

I'm not sure if ESPN gets it, but watching TV like that nearly negates the value of a wide-screen tv.

Shin kicks to any producer that messes with the camera angles during live play.

Maybe the only good thing about the overhead camera angle was that it immediately became quality comedy fodder. Everyone from coaches to reporters to fans weighed in via Twitter, a sampling of which you'll find below.

• Lexington Herald reporter John Clay: "When TV can give you the best seat in the house, why would it give you the worst seat in the house?"

• Xavier coach Chris Mack: "ESPN, please make it stop! This is going to give people vertigo ..."

Kentucky Sports Radio blogger Thomas Beisner: "Renardo Sidney ate the other camera angles."
