I tried that program and it didn't find anything yet the problem persists so I am trying their full antivirus program now. If that doesn't find anything I give up.

Instead of reinstalling Windows from scratch I used the update function on the Windows disc and that seems to have solved the problem. If there are any more issues I will reinstall Windows from scratch but, for now, things seem fine and I didn't lose anything files, folders, or settings my doing it this way.

Thanks for the vibes and to CB&B for all of the help.

I reinstalled Windows 7 and everything seems fine now. All I have to do is reinstall various programs (Office, Acrobat, etc.) and everything should be good. I backed up all of my files but, as it turns out, they were all saved in the 'Windows.old' folder so I just had to move them from there to where I wanted them. Once the programs are all reinstalled I will delete that folder to clear up all of the space it is hogging.

I was thinking of reinstalling Avira antivirus but I was using that when my computer got infected so I think I will try to find another good, but free, one and will install that instead. I would use AVG but have had problems with that in the past so I think I will search out an entirely new antivirus program.

http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials

It's free, we run an enterprise version of it at work. I run it at home on my machines. Just announced that it's going to be available for free to small businesses too: http://windowsteamblog.com/windows/b/wi ... esses.aspx

You might want to install this too: http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwa ... fault.aspx

Here is a weird problem that I fixed when I previously installed Windows 7 on my laptop and desktop but that I can't remember the solution for so I'm hoping someone else here knows how to resolve this.

In my Start Menu, some of the icons for installed programs have disappeared. The program is still listed but the icon is blank. This seems to happen to random programs after other programs are installed. Has anyone else encountered this and, if so, can you remember how to fix it?
