The game is now a sellout, making 3 sellouts in a row that Duke will be involved in. 2 out of those 3 are at home. :D

The advantage gained by running the ball is you can grind out long possessions, which keeps your defense off the field and fresh. Time of possession is the stat which will go a long way toward showing who wins the game. If either Duke or Wake have the ball significantly longer than the other over the first three quarters, that team's defense will be fresher in the decisive 4th Quarter of the ball game. We need to wear out Wake's defense by successfully running the ball.

We rushed for 192 yards against Elon and need to rush for a similar number this week. I'm excited, 21 hours to kick-off.
I want to see us run one back tomorrow. :D I'm also looking for legitimate ground numbers and I think we have the guys to do it..and I think we have the O-line finally to help them out.
I do agree that we need to establish a running game tomorrow, but this team is definitely built around the passing game. And Duke needs to get Austin Kelly and Brett Huffman more involved tomorrow than they were against Elon. That will open the field for big plays by the killer V's.

GO DUKE!

You're definitely correct, Duke's primary offensive strategy is the pass so I am not advocating we abandon the passing game. Establishing the run will force defenses to respond by moving a safety into run support, which will open up the field for our corps of talented wide receivers. I believe we can establish the run against Wake Forest and when Wake has to focus on stopping the run Sean Renfree will burn them with the pass.

In regard tot he Tight End position, I'm anxiously anticipating the debut of Cooper Helfet. Helfet is 6'4" 240 with good speed.

Why was Dukediv on the WFU sidelines? I saw him there at the end of the game.

21 pts off turnovers will just not do it. Our defense isn't that good and we gave WFU too many chances to beat our D. If our offense and punter had just held onto the ball more, we coulda won this one, in spite of a weak D.

The good:

487 total yards
129 yds rushing
4.4 yds per rush (sooooo much better than previous years)
Vernon 181 rec yds
Scott 122 rush yds
2/2 on FG

The bad:
TO margin: -2
Renfree: 3 INT
giving up 229 rush yds
giving up 4 passing TDs

To be fair to Renfree, two of those INTs were the tipped variety, where the reciever was the first to make contact with the ball. Renfree is a very accurate passer but he needs to learn a little finesse and touch. Being fair to Wake, that shoestring catch INT was really a good play.
Looks like Duke's biggest weakness is in the defensive secondary.
There will be a LOT of film to be studied over the coming week.

You are right that 2 of the 3 INT's were tipped. But the pass to Varner was a bad throw, that was thrown behind him. Varner tried his best to bring it in, but failed. Renfree had a very good game, but they cant give up 50+ points in any game.

What he said. Austin Kelly was awful today. 2 passes through his hands for picks and another 50 yard bomb he dropped.

Well we lost, and obviously had our chances..but I see good things happening in the future. This game was a lot of fun...frustrating as hell at times, but way fun.

2 of Renfree's INT were Austin Kelly's fault. Right through his hands and wfu was damned lucky to get 1 as it hit the ground. He also dropped about a 50 yd bomb on about the wfu 20.

Our secondary was awful, giving up 2 of those TDs with no defender within 10 yds of the wfu receiver, both times biting on fakes into the line and simply abandoning their coverage.

Renfree was not as sharp today. He only threw one really bad ball-a floater that they picked as we were driving on about their 30. He also had several tosses short and behind our receivers.

Oh, and it would be nice if the fucking ass, err, acc refs had called a holding penalty or three on wfu today. Their final TD was a result of a nice jersey grab and full nelson on one of our DB as they ran outside and to the left and got to about our 1.

They also missed a blatant offensive pass interference call on wake's 1st TD (IIRC) when their WR pushed our DB beyond him so he could make the catch.

Our offense also went in the hopper the 2nd half, gaining only about 160 yds while wfu got about 225. They scored more on us than they did on Presbyterian, IIRC. dukediv and I fear 'Bama may easily go for more than 60 points against us.

Those he (Renfree) was short on were fade-aways, where he had a defender in his face and was back peddling. You will be short nearly every time you pass that way. What got me was the heat on his passes. He's not Fav-ree. Not every pass has to be a speeding bullet. Experience will show him this way through. Sometimes less, is more. He will improve...cornerbacks and safeties...better learn quickly. There's a beast coming in to visit next week. :twitch:

48 points should be enough to win any football game. It does not matter how explosive our offense is, we are not going toto be competitive with the "big boys" if we give up 50+ points.
