The late great Pulitzer Prize winning columnist Mike Royko said it better than anyone: "No, I won't condemn anyone for putting ketchup on a hot dog. This is the land of the free. And if someone wants to put ketchup on a hot dog and actually eat the awful thing, that is their right. It is also their right to put mayo or chocolate syrup or toenail clippings or cat hair on a hot dog. Sure, it would be disgusting and perverted, and they would be shaming themselves and their loved ones. But under our system of government, it is their right to be barbarians."

That link is only valid if one wants a Chicago style hot dog. Since the hot dog existed long before Chicago did, and because I do not live in Chicago, I refuse to adhere to their version of what a 'proper' hot dog should be. I mean c'mon, these are the same people who supported the Cubs through decades of futility so how can you trust their opinion on
anything?!?

I wasn't disputing it. I was referring to the places and era from which it originated as making it likely that it
was invented for that purpose. I doubt we'll ever know for certain but, based on where and when it came from, it is an argument that I think has some validity.

Well, I doubt that the Nazis invented it, but they certainly used it in an evil way.
As for my dog, I like a little ketchup, a bit more mustard, some onions, and some sweet relish.

Don't know about the Nazis, but didn't Germany use Mustard Gas in the first world war? Maybe the post was referencing that?

Nope. It was the Romans (in the world according to Wiki).
FWIW, it was first used as a hot dog condiment in St. Louis at the 1904 World's Fair. I believe the ice cream cone was first sold at that fair as well.
NOTE TO ARKIE: Hopefully you have been learning useless St. Louis trivia. Eventually, it CAN be used in conversation.
