Computer Help Needed
I've been having problems for a couple of days when opening .pdf files in Firefox. Firefox will hang and then freeze (this only happens when it is attempting to open .pdf files). I haven't made any changes to my system so I figured the easiest way to resolve this would be to do a system restore. When the computer restarted I received this message:
"System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer’s system files and setting were not changed.
Details:
System Restore failed while scanning the file system on the drive C:/ The drive may be corrupt. You might want to retry System Restore after running chkdsk/R on this disk.
An unspecified error occurred during System Restore. (0x8000ffff)
You can try System Restore again and choose a different restore point. If you continue to see this error, you can try an advanced recovery method. For more information, see What is Recovery?"
Can any of the experts here give me any idea what this all means? Can my system restore feature be easily repaired? Might my C drive be screwed up somehow? Would running the Windows 7 installation disc help repair either of these issues? What are my 'advanced recovery' options to use instead of system restore?

Re: Computer Help Needed
It's hard to know why a system restore fails, often is simply because some expected files are missing (this is often the case after a virus scanner removes files). I would run the diskcheck as indicated. You can do this in a command prompt (start - run- cmd). Enter in chkdsk /r, it will prompt you that it can't run since the volume is currently in use and will ask if you want it to run after a restart. I would also test the hard drive. Identify your drive manufacturer (device manager will tell you) and see what diagnostic tools they have on their website for download.colchar wrote:I've been having problems for a couple of days when opening .pdf files in Firefox. As for your .pdf problems, have you tried reinstalling both adobe reader and Firefox?

I haven't tried to reinstall Adobe Acrobat because I can't find the disc. I'll look around for it and will then reinstall it.

Unless you have the full Acrobat program, the reader is a free download.colchar wrote: I haven't tried to reinstall Adobe Acrobat because I can't find the disc. I'll look around for it and will then reinstall it.

Exactly. I doubt you have Acrobat...it's a useless way to spend $500.OZZIE4DUKE wrote:Unless you have the full Acrobat program, the reader is a free download.colchar wrote: I haven't tried to reinstall Adobe Acrobat because I can't find the disc. I'll look around for it and will then reinstall it.

Oh I definitely have Acrobat but trust me, it didn't cost me $500. In fact, it didn't cost me a penny

I ran the diagnostic tool from Western Digital and it said everything was fine. I'm heading out briefly now so I will restart the computer so that is can run the chkdsk thing and I'll see what it comes up with.

I ran the check disk thing and it didn't report any problems either.

Re: Computer Help Needed
I 'obtained' a newer version of Acrobat and installed it so hopefully that will resolve everything.
