Bowling

Post by EarlJam » April 19th, 2010, 2:20 pm

I don't bowl that often, but if I did so regularly, I believe I would come up with a way to steer my bowling ball via remote control. It may involve gyroscopes, and it would certainly involve some kind of steering mechanism in my wrist strap but either way, I think it would be entirely possible.

I would roll the ball slowly, to give time to manipulate the remote control and steer the ball to the desired point. I would enter tournaments and set all kinds of scoring records while winning championships and a sizable purse.

Occasionally, I would go for the spare or open frame on purpose, as to not raise too much suspicion. If the governing bodies of the bowling world were to seize my ball and find the mechanism within, I would certainly be banned from the sport for life, and could be looking at prison time. I feel quite certain such events would greatly lower my chances to get into the bowling hall of fame.

Anyway, it's all moot. I don't bowl that often.

And you're worried about germs being spread by handshakes? BOWLING is a germaphobe's nightmare. :-?

EJ - Here is a TIP, I do this with my kiddos and I always ask for a lane with Rails! It is fun for them that way to preclude gutter balls and such, however, it is kind of fun to also play bumper bowling ... although that happens by surprise to me also on occasion, but I nurture when the kiddos occasionally go from side to side because they slipped and hit the floor! Those shoes can be slick! LOL! ;) :D When Daddy does it, IT must be okay to make mistakes, LORD knows I make plenty of them! ;)

Otherwise, I am very competitive and play without, but I like the remote idea!

When I was 15, I figured that if I didn't make it to the major leagues, I'd be a pro bowler. Oh, well, two dreams shot to hell. Before leaving NY for Florida, I was on the HS varsity bowling team my sophomore year and got a letter. While at Duke, I was secretary of the IM league for 2 years (mostly I figured out everyone's average, etc., and kept the records) and bowled on Duke's entry in the annual Big Four contests (obviously Duke against carolina, State and Wake Forest) in the spring. We won it two of three years! I averaged ~177 back then. I had my all time high score while at Duke in league play, rolling a 255. My previous best was rolled one magical day when I was ~13, a 236.

I've bowled only sporadically since graduating 34 years ago, and no way I could hoist my 16 pound Dick Weber anymore. In fact, last time I bowled at a nephew's birthday party (about 2 years ago), I put "my" ball away after one throw and found a 12 pounder on the lane's racks. Didn't fit my fingers worth a crap, but it didn't hurt my shoulder either :D

I wouldn't want a remote controlled ball. It wouldn't be any fun. Besides, back in the day, I was a spare making machine!
Your paradigm of optimism

That's why my wife and I bought our own equipment, both footwear and round, spherical objects for rolling. Yea, shoot me. I'm paranoid after the "what are you reading" thread. ;)
