T.J. Hoops

Post by EarlJam » March 18th, 2010, 11:09 am

As tip-off to March Madness is almost here, I can't help but think of my favorite old "stomping ground" in Durham for watching Duke games. T.J. HOOPS!

Anyone else remember this place? Anyone else love it as much as my group did?

A night of watching a game would go something like this:

1. Walk in, have a few beers.
2. Play H.O.R.S.E. and 21 on the indoor "actual-size" court (it was just bigger than the lane).
3. Call timeout.....walk three feet to order another beer.
4. Start challenging fans of rival schools to rough games of two-on-two.
5. Time out. Beer.
6. Apologize to the lady at table six when an errant pass knocks over her drink.
7. Watch game on big screen T.V. (it was cooler than a lot of bars today because, though they had lots of TVs, they only had one big one in the corner. And there would be a massive group around it. It felt like family.
8. Halftime - More hoops and beers.
9. Watch end of game.
10. Play pool.
11. Celebrate. Or cry. Then leave and wait for the next big game.

I was so sad when I learned they had shut down years ago. I wish a place like that would open again.

Never went there, but remember the name. I remember watching T.J. Hooker.
Duke born, Duke bred, cooking on a grill so I'm tailgate fed.
