I think it's really cool that "Up" got a nod in this category. I thought Wall*E was deserving before, but it didn't happen.

I found all but one of the nominations for Avatar to be fitting. I don't think the movie deserved the nod for Best Picture. It is entirely incomplete as a picture. The script is horrible, the human acting is wretched, and I just don't see how it could stack up against previous winners in the category. I think it should sweep the technical categories.

Agreed on Avatar's quality as a movie in and of itself. Its nomination for Best Picture is probably just a shot for populist appeal that the Oscars have lacked in recent years. Also, it seems an acknowledgment that it was so technically superior to other films this year that it deserves consideration. I'd be surprised if it wins, as it'd mainly be based on buzz and box-office revenues, but stranger things have happened. Personally, I'm disappointed that I only saw 3 of the 5 nominees for Animated picture. I must be slacking. I sincerely doubt there's much contest with "Up" for that category.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. However, I"m willing to accept arguments from others that see the merit in Titanic winning. Titanic didn't rely solely on the special effects, so I feel like there should be some room to discuss other aspects of the movie. Take away the digital rendered world of Avatar, and replace it with actors in big costumes or claymation and the movie is a pile of tripe.

On second thought, animation a la "Clash of the Titans" and "Jason and the Argonauts" might improve "Avatar". It would force the script writers to do their jobs, and force the actors to ac. It would look badass.

I saw District 9, The Blind Side, Inglourious Basterds, and Avatar.

I can't see anything beating The Blind Side but I really enjoyed Inglourious Basterds!

Watch Up. It won't win (it will win best animated I bet), but it is worthy of being there. When it's not emotionally sweet, it's funny as hell. Classic Pixar.
