Quite the night. What is DFH Red & Blue? Is that a combination of Red & White and Black & Blue? I saw BB this week for the first time but didn't pick some up. Maybe next time.

Weyerbacher Double Simcoe IPA..If this wasn't the most bitter beer I've ever tired, it's very close. Pure grassy, citrus hops..While many other double IPAs have that slight sweet malt balance, this had none. It wasn't abrasive though, as there was a surprisingly smoothness to the hop bitterness. A very fresh, crisp drinking beer, especially for a hop lover. I prefer something with a little more balance but glad I tried it...

Has anyone had the DFH Sah'tea? It's a sahti style of beer which is an old Finish farmhouse/wild ale. The style isn't hopped but instead draws flavor from juniper twigs. It's apparently been released recently, so I'm on the lookout.

Also, for the New Belgium fans, I saw Sunshine Wheat in a can yesterday so the Fat Tire in a can experiment must've work out.

Avery Maharaja IIPA: This beer has been reviewed many times before by me, and, IIRC, both DD and Lavabe on TPWKJGTFI (the place where king jumbo goes to feel important). Nonetheless, here is a review of batch nine, bottled in February of this year.

For a change of pace I poured into a 22oz red wine glass. This beer is a gorgeous reddish orange color that almost looks like grapefruit juice (foreshadowing). The nose is very pungent with a heavy dose of cannabis, pine, fresh grapefruit juice and a hint of malty sweetness. The flavor has a nice bitterness without, surprisingly, going overboard. It tastes like it smells, with a very refreshing citrus kick (this may be a decent breakfast beer :o ). Perhaps they've scaled back the bitterness this year, or, maybe my palate is adjusting, but this beer is much more drinkable than I remember. My taste-buds are still intact.

As a brief aside, when I was in Ohio in March, my Dad pulled out a bottle of February, 2007 Maharaja from the cellar. The hops had definitely mellowed out over time and it was a very strong, well balanced beer. It was good, but not as good as it is fresh.

It was the DFH Red and White. I saw the Black and Blue and the Fort while in DC and only bought the R&W. The Fort was REAL expensive, about $20 or more for a 750 ml bottle.

I had a 6er (or was it a 4 pack?) last year and traded a couple. Unique stuff. I'd agree with this.

Funny you should ask, the Kalamazoo Stout was next.

Let's see, what do I remember about this one from early in the evening :oops: .

Dark, dark brown and almost black. Roasty with little chocolate tones and lots of espresso flavors. Modest bitterness. Perhaps a bit of licorice and molasses, too. IBU about 50-60 and 6% ABV. I wasn't the host so we just tasted whatever we grabbed next out of the 'fridge/off the counter. Usually, you should taste lightest to darkest and lowest ABV to highest ABV.

I'll skip #3 as rmd, CB&B and I have reviewed it previously here and on TOWEL, except to say the guy who brought it claimed he bought the bomber for $2.99 or $3.99 at a small specialty shop in Raleigh. He may have been sampling BEFORE the host and I :oops: :roll: .

Entry 3.5: Stone Smoked Porter. Just as it sounds with a dark brown pour and a deep peat-y, smoky, gamey aroma and taste but not overpowering. This matched fairly nicely with the toasted pita crackers/points, roasted red pepper hummus and fresh salsa. Mildly hoppy but not as much as their reputation is for outta this world IBU (see Arrogant Bastard, Ruination IPA, etc) and 5.9% ABV. This would be marvelous with game, smoked fish and cheeses. I like the Alaskan Smoked Porter a bit better overall.

I'm not quite sure why we ended up with the dark side of beverages at this time of year. The Red and White, next up, was the "lightest" of the beers of the evening, outside of the Duvel after dinner, before the dessert session. Hell, we haven't even had dinner yet and we've had 4 tastings. :oops:

Continuing on from the evening of debauchery:

4. Dogfish Head Red and White-The ladies had their chardonnays and malbec and the guys had this. I think we won :lol: . But, the malbec was a nice wine. This beer, served in 4-6 ounces port glasses (we were running out of stemware at this time :oops: ) is a Belgian wit style but with MUCH more body. Orange pour with a modest head with great tastes of coriander and orange peel. What makes this unique, is the 11% pinot noir juice (wine, I guess) which has been added and the concoction was then aged in wine casks and oak casks giving it a bit of vanilla/maple/apple/honey essences. Hop presence is light and the ABV is 10% so this made a great pair with the shrimp/bacon/garlic/tomato angel hair pasta dish with fresh parmesan and a mixed greeen (weedy) salad with goat cheese, walnuts and strawberries and a light balsamic dressing. I am still coherent at this part of the dinner. :oops:
