Re: Duke Trivia
Here's the answer to the legend of The Sower, a statue on East Campus: If you put a coin in The Sower's hand and make a wish, your wish will be granted. Most wishes were about finding one's true love.Devil in the Blue Dress wrote:Since the questions are focusing on East Campus, how about this one..... What's the legend about The Sower?OZZIE4DUKE wrote:According to legend, why was the fence around East Campus originally constructed, and why is it so "short"? Terry Sanford had a number of small replicas made up to give to various honorees, but that's not the story I've got in mind.
That reminds me of another oldie. Wasn't there some sort of fountain on East where people threw coins and made wishes?.... I'm not referring to the one that used to be behind the West Campus laundry.
Re: Duke Trivia
Yes! The Sower! I told my daughter to put some coins in his hand when she graduated, for good luck. She had never heard it but ran right over and did so.
Oh yeah, and there is a secret society at Duke that marches around the quad in the spring in black robes. I had a friend who was/is in it but to this day he still denies my having watched him do his ritual with a whole bunch of other guys (says something cute like, "what part of secret society do you not understand?".) Maybe they allowed women in since my day.

They were still doing their thing when I was there. One of the basketball players who later transferred to Dartmouth was in it for a time.weezie wrote:Yes! The Sower! Re: Duke Trivia
So I answered that one from memory, but it was because I've read this page before:
http://library.duke.edu/uarchives/faqs/duke_blue.html
I think while doing some research into school colors for the Duke wikipedia articles. Interestingly, the goduke website says the official school colors are Royal Blue and white.

Really. My tour guide said that you put a penny in his hand with your girlfriend, and if you came back the next day and the Sower had accepted your "offering" and it was gone, you'd get your HEA.Devil in the Blue Dress wrote:Here's the answer to the legend of The Sower, a statue on East Campus: If you put a coin in The Sower's hand and make a wish, your wish will be granted. Oh, and they also told me that "Duke Blue" was also known as "Yale Blue". So, i guess Yale is really the Duke of the North. ;)
