From the standard webcam page (which is terribly jammed w/ traffic- that's why it's down so much...):

Note: the large amount of new smoke seen is due to backfires set by firefighters. This is the very best thing to do at the moment. Go California firefighters!

Someone needs to tell them that today is Tuesday, 1 Sep 09. Bless their hearts.

TV signals are still being broadcast over the air. But instead of an over the air analog signal, it's over the air digital. This means that regular rabbit ears attached to a TV can no longer interpret the signal (they don't know how to "speak digital"). You need a digital converter box to take what your rabbit ears pick up, decode the digital signal, then pass it to the TV. So people can still use antennas to receive over the air TV, they just need a converter box.

People with cable or satellite are not affected by the above, as the cable/satellite company handles it all for you.

That's why the govmint sent out all those $40 coupons - so we could buy those $49 converter boxes for only $9.

Thanks for the link, Sue. I had been wondering about controlled burns.
