That is why I have cats. They are brilliant! Only a cat could figure out how to open and close the drawer where the q-tips are kept so he can play with them.

Walter is a delightful combination of plenty smart and total dipshit. The first time I took him to the vet in Atlanta (after I'd had him for almost a year), she asked within two minutes, "Now, Walter is kind of a goofball, isn't he?" I really have no idea how she figured that out as he cowered on the exam table with his ears plastered back, but she was spot-on correct.

Good calls both. Thomas Wolfe would definitely get one; in fact, he ought to get one before James Taylor. The Asheville people would certainly lobby to have a rest area over there named after Wolfe.

Yeah, but NC and SC both have a penchant for naming highways and overpasses (!!) for miscellanous politicians, e.g. "Mayor Boss Hogg Memorial Interchange"; I'm willing to bet most of the natives might not know who these people are. If an exit is named for some corrupt old-school segregationist, I'd be tempted to never use it out of spite...

In PA many highways tend to be named after Army battalions and veterans of assorted wars.

There's also a Strom Thurmond High School in Johnston, SC, west of Columbia. I wonder if you can conscientiously object to your local school's name and get transferred elsewhere? Hell, I wonder if the damn place is even integrated.

I had to cheat - been away from Durham too long, apparently. Check this out - a who's who of NC roads. Quite an odd lot. James Taylor is on the list but not Thomas Wolfe...

An older gentleman who used to live around the corner from my grandparents was named Bumpass Thompson. He went by "Bumpy." He was a retired big-time banker and one of those jolly old guys. My brother and I always got a kick out of him because of his disposition and because his name was Bumpy.

Interesting that "Buck" Dean is on the list. One of my neighbors (now deceased) has our stretch named for him. He was once Secretary of NC Transportation. He isn't on this list. Wesley D. Webster.
