Trees by Joyce Kilmer

I THINK that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the sweet earth's flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

I have a part of the tree that is supposedly from Joyce Kilmer's yard - it is framed with the poem.

I think the branch is from this tree:

from Wikipedia talking about claims of which tree inspired the poem: Most noted among them is the tradition in Kilmer's birthplace, New Brunswick, New Jersey, which states that Kilmer wrote the poem "Trees" after a large white oak (Quercus alba) tree that was located on the outskirts of town on the campus of Cook College (now known as the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences), at Rutgers University.[41] This tree, estimated to be over three hundred years old, was so weakened by age and disease that it had to be removed in 1963.[42] Currently, saplings from acorns of the historic tree are being grown at the site, throughout the Middlesex County area, and in major arboretums around the United States. The remains of the original Kilmer Oak are currently kept in storage at Rutgers University.[43][44]

Isn't it a bit ironic that someone chopped up the tree that inspired a poem on beautiful trees are?

edit..DinK just posted the Wiki bit that explains it further...at least it was sick and dying.

As I'm sure most of us already know, there is a rest area named for Joyce Kilmer on the New Jersey Turnpike.

Recent conversation between BD and hubby.

Hubby: We're going to have to pull off on the turnpike somewhere.
BD: Should we do Joyce Kilmer or wait for Vince Lombardi?

Poodles are geniuses. Though I don't foresee a dog in my future. Well, maybe a rescued greyhound down the road. We'll see.

My cat is crazy. Before we named her my friends gave her the nickname "Leaping Bear". One day I was walking around downstairs when I heard this loud CRASH!!! As I made my way to the living room to see what happened, I realized that Leaping Bear (Chloe) had been walking along a ledge that we have over the fireplace mantle (a good 10 feet above?) - level with the balcony on the second floor, and had fallen off! Thank God she didn't land on the lamp, wooden table, glass table, mantle, or the metal fence around the fireplace!

Oh, and she really likes to clean my hair when I'm sitting on the couch and while I'm trying to go to sleep. :D
