BD's Announcement
No, it's not just that I'm coming down for Homecoming.
Some of you follow my youngest son's progress on Carepages but many of you do not. He is facing more treatment in the near future. This time the docs want to do radiation. He will be starting sometime this fall. We will know more after Tuesday. I'm going to request starting after Thanksgiving as I plan to come back to Durham for Thanksgiving this year too - BD's family is having a mini-reunion. We have every faith that radiation will be the knock out punch.
Radiation is every day for 6 weeks. I also want to be available for early pick-up if necessary for the rest of the school year. Consequently, I have given notice at my job that I will be leaving when the treatment begins. I quit my job! I've never quit a job before. (I had summer jobs but that never felt like quitting.) It feels weird even though I'll still be working for at least another month and maybe two. I'm trying to finish up a couple of projects. I've had this particular job since 1996, I've been working with my boss since 1994, and I've been working in the Harvard Medical School area since 1988, Right now, I don't know how long I will voluntarily remain unemployed, at least for this school year. Knowing me, I'll be looking for work by May but still. No, I don't want to take leave. I need a clean break. Still, strange.

Strongest possible vibes for your son, his treatment, your fabulous job you will get after he is 100% and back to normal.

In this day and age, you could probably get an extended leave. Very bold and courageous move to terminate your employment after so many years. Right decision? You bet your butt it is. It's family. You can/will find another job. You won't get another son. I applaud you heartily and wish and pray for a great result and a long, happy, productive life, for you and all your family.

Most people say that is it is the intellect which makes a great scientist. They are wrong: it is character.

Re: BD's Announcement
We have you on our front vibe burner. You and your son will have squatters' rights there until you give the word that all is well again. So smart of you to give yourself some room to breathe. You'll need to take care of yourself for his sake. This time you and he have to devote to teamwork in beating this thing will be the most rewarding of your life. Good luck. We're all staying tuned in for progress reports!
Love, Ima
