Need some advice for wife traveling...

Post by bjornolf » June 8th, 2015, 12:04 pm

My wife's boss is sending her to Germany for a week next month. She has been warned not to take her cell phone or get on wifi there because malware can be pushed onto it. Also, she's been told Verizon phones don't work very well over there cause they're not GSM. Is there a prepaid phone she can buy before she leaves that would work over there? Anyone else have any experience or advice about this, or about other security concerns?

Thanks.

My advice is to take you and the kids with so you can all enjoy Germany...she won't need her phone then! Play the learning experience for the kids card - works every time! ;)

Tried that. None of us have passports. She has a government passport so can't stay after. She is also terrified of taking our family to Europe with all the targeting of Americans around the world right now. Her training from the government this week freaked her out even more about that.

I can check with my co-worker when I get home. She just sent her kids off to Germany for a band tour. I do know that credit cards and debit cards need to have a chip in them as of 6/1.

They overemphasize the risks. Millions travel to Europe without issue...

1. Try telling her that.

2. 95% of them aren't US gov't on business.

Probably more like 99%. I know lots of military and ex who do so safely. Yes, you do need to take some precautions, but ...

Viper is a free app for free international calls. You both need to have it for the calls to be free. We used it when Bud was out of the country this year.
