Does anybody else get as excited as I do about Shark Week? Back in the day, my brother and I used to "camp out" in the living room so we could stay up late and watch. It was always a last gasp for summer fun, as Shark Week has traditionally been in August, shortly before school starts back. It's still one of my favorite things about the Discovery Channel.

Are you kidding me? Hello, this is the girl who swam with sharks. I love sharks. So, to answer your question, yes I am very excited Shark Week is finally here.

I dunno, Shark Week kind of bothers me due to the sensationalism around it. Sharks are pretty misunderstood, and get a really bad rap.

Some of the shows are so over-the-top with the narration - the build-up, the event, the aftermath - for one simple little encounter, it's like watching 20 min. of TV for a 5-second event.

That said, sharks are thrilling, and I like watching the divers, so I'll probably tune in now and then. With the TV on mute.

I enjoy shark week, but it always reminds me of the Friends episode with the "shark porn."

I don't usually ask friends to sign petitions as it's just not me. But, as you all seem to love and respect sharks as much as I do, I am asking you to please take a look at this petition and if you feel compelled to sign it. Sharks are not a threat to humans, though humans are a grave threat to sharks. Sharks are butchered for their fins, and then thrown back in the ocean to die. If we humans, cause the extinction of sharks, there is no telling what troubles we are asking for in our oceans. Sharks play an important role in our oceans ecosystem.

Please keep in mind, sharks are not invading our "territory", we are invading theirs.

I used to watch Shark Week with my family as a wee lad. Loved it. I don't get as "up" for it like I used to, but I do enjoy it and will probably watch some this week.

And I do fear causing the extinction of sharks. If we cause their extinction, we may be visited by an alien probe in three hundred years that vaporizes our oceans and deprives us of the sunlight we need for power, endangering the human race ... unless we can find a way to reply to the probe's call.

Or is that whales. Ah well... probably shouldn't hut either to extinction.

I was a bit disappointed with the new shows on last night. It seems all Discovery wants to show are shark attacks, especially white shark and bull shark attacks. I know there has to be more to sharks than the attacks. No wonder people are afraid of sharks when all they ever see are attacks.

I did enjoy Sunday's movie Blood on the Beach. I did not realize Jaws, both the book and the movie, was based on real life events.

I love how they dramatize everything. The Caribbean is the 5th most dangerous ocean due to shark attacks! A whopping 100 shark attacks have been recorded there in HISTORY! I caught a few episodes yesterday and didn't like most of them. Although the one filmed in South Africa around Seal Island was pretty cool. Seeing the sharks destroying that dead whale was impressive. But man, was that dead whale gross. I agree with DevilAlumna. The 5 seconds of the shark footage that we wait 20 minutes to see is a little ridiculous.

If you have the chance, read the book about the NY attacks on which Jaws is loosely based. Can't remember the name offhand, but recently (a couple years) all over stores, and very good.

Once again, playing up the negatives about sharks, instead of what they contribute to the marine ecosystem, what would likely happen if sharks were obliterated, etc.

Did you watch the show at 10:00 p.m.? I started to, then when I started to watch the vignette that included the small dog, I saw the proverbial writing on the wall (dog attacked by shark) and turned the channel. Am wondering if that is in fact what happened.

Umm, the Caribbean is an extensive island system! More folks are in the water more of the time! There are a lot of sharks there - it's a warm sea with lots of food! Of course there are going to be more shark/human encounters, duuuuhhhhhhhh. I'm going to guess there are quite a high level of jellyfish stings there too - when's jellyfish week again?

No, I didn't watch the 10:00 p.m. show. I turned it off shortly before that and went to bed.
A dog though?! Is Shark Week entirely about what sharks can do to humans and other animals with their teeth?

Hate to say it, but TV is a business, and the shows about attacks is what gets the ratings. I'd bet money that shark attack shows get 10x the ratings that shows about "saving the sharks", for better or worse.

My beef was that none of the shows are new. The dates I saw were all early and mid-2000's.
