Aftermath

Post by OZZIE4DUKE » November 21st, 2014, 12:43 am

Well, the unclustered tailgate became a clusterfuck of a game. We were awful.

Next game. I miss the Bell already. :9f:

My hopes for this season now center on a win in a bowl game. I'm fine with any bowl game.

The team needs to regroup, refocus and beat Wake Forest next Saturday. 9-3 is a great record so let's get it done!

I feel like we got in our car in November, 2014 and immediately became time travelers as we returned to Wallace Wade Stadium circa 2007 (except the house was full) to witness a frighteningly Roof-ian performance on both sides of the ball, on the sidelines and from the coaches booth high above the field, totally embarrassing ourselves to a national audience in the process. Embarras ourselves in front of a national audience? Not really - most tuned out during the first quarter. The only ones who will remember this game are us, carolina and Georgia Tech. :9f:

Ga Tech clinched the Coastal Title. Unc got the Victory Bell. We will drop out of the AP. Lost at home, with a sold out Wallace Wade,
Those Black Uniforms turned out to be VooDoo rather than Black Magic.

This debacle on national TV can't help recruiting. What's more, it will take years to convince the students to come back again. This was not just loss to the pastels, it was a major step backwards for the program.

We lost to Louisville in the Elite 8 3 seasons ago after one of their key players broke his leg in the first half. They destroyed us in the second half. Other than ending that season, it certainly didn't hurt our recruiting either of the next two (Parker, Okafor, Winslow, Jones and Grayson), or even three (Jeter and Kennard), seasons, and it had no lasting affect on the program.

We still have Wake next Saturday (in front of what surely will be a mostly empty WW the Saturday after Thanksgiving) to win our 10th game of the season and then a bowl game, our 11th win, hopefully within a day's drive of here (the generic central north carolina area). Russell Athletic Bowl in Orlando? Maybe, certainly my preference to go to a warm location! Music City Bowl in Memphis? More likely, and we're looking forward to going there as we've never been to Memphis, although we're not looking forward to a cold weather outdoor bowl location. If Cut can get our team's collective heads out of their asses and start playing smart, clean football (no turnovers, few penalties) like we did for 8 weeks, we'll be fine. :duke: :9f:

We're 8-3 now so there's no way we can get to 11 wins this year, even if we hired Debby Crowder and used the c*rolina GPA schedule. Go look at the Bowl Vigil thread OY. I think that'll explain how/why the Russell Athletic Bowl is likely a fantasy also as f$u, GT, Clemson, ND and possibly UL would be selected before us based on bowl pecking order. There's still too many possibilities at this point but, suffice it to say, we really, really soiled the bed w/our loss to VT and then again last PM with a truly wretched performance. I totally agree with the cranio-rectal assessment.

As for the idea of this being an embarrassment on national TV which sets the program back, I don't think so. From an historical perspective, the 1959 game broadcast on national TV, (the 50-0 loss which triggered the addition of "to hell with Carolina" in one of our fight songs) is much worse. After that low point, the 1960 team came back to play well enough to get to the Cotton Bowl. Following last night's game, Coach Cutcliffe noted that Duke is still one of the few teams in the top five conferences with an 8-3 record. He emphasized that there is now a 2 game season to prepare for.

Yes, it was disappointing, very disappointing, but we need to think like winners if that's what we want to be. Mourn it and move on. ;;)

I think it was a step backwards for this team, but not for the program. And this team still has time to make its season one to remember. Last night sucked, no two ways about it. But we have the chance to go out on a high note, once again in prime-time in front of a national TV audience with our 7PM game against Wake Forest. I'm looking forward to one last amazing (home) tailgate and walking away from campus with a smile to end the year.

I just looked at goduke.com and it does list our game as ESPNU at 7 pm. Hope it's warmer by then! :9f:
