New OC: Randy Sanders? (No...it's Scottie Montgomery)

Unconfirmed Tweet from Justin Rowland (I have no idea who the hell he is) says Randy Sanders will be Duke's new assistant coach. Sanders is currently the QB Coach at FSU and was previously at UK after many seasons at Tennessee.

Also some rumors OL Coach John Latina will be going to Florida with Roper.

Now that would be a loss if Coach Latina left. Of course, I remind myself that Coach Cutcliffe has quite a deep network to draw upon. He's upgraded with each hire.

I am sure Scottie would bring his own ideas, but also be able to keep some of what was already in place with Roper's offense. I imagine that will not be the case with a guy coming in from the outside, so it presents a new learning curve for the offense to catch up to.

Good points but (I hope) it won't hurt much to bring in the QB coach of the current Heisman winner who assisted the 1st or 2nd ranked offense in the country for the 2013 season ;) .

Maybe not...I'm sure they'll be differences, but should this come to pass, it won't be a completely different system. Sanders is from the coaching tree of Johnny Majors and was with Coach Cutcliffe for several years at Tennessee. He was very productive when Coach Cut left for Ole Miss. He continued to have success at Kentucky and was there when Coach Petri was there. I'm not sure what happened at UK because while they had some success for awhile, the wheels came off at some point. Working down at Florida St as the QB coach is absolutely not a bad gig. The biggest down side that I see is that he may not stay very long.

On Coach Latina, I'm not in his shoes, but from my vantage point....I wouldn't leave. He's had the most success with Coach Cutcliffe. At a big time program he struggled even with a "expert" offensive guru in Charlie Weis. Duke should be good for another year or two on offense and as Duke does better, our pockets will get deeper. We're not ever going to have Texas money to throw at coaches, but again, we should be okay. I still think Florida is somewhat of a gamble. Those fans expect championships. They could get 9 wins next year and show some real progress and still get the boot. I also understand that if you are in the coaching business and you think you're good, then you are going to be optimistic that you'll win wherever you go, but if he goes to Florida and they don't have success out of the gate....what's your next gig? Almost all your success has been tied to 1 coach and it's then clear you're not able to produce at big time programs.

If that's the case, it's excellent news! John Latina has made such a difference at Duke.

It will be interesting to see which coaches are on staff come early February.

I am of the mindset that promoting Montgomery to OC would be a safe and good move by Cutcliffe. He has a decent amount of coaching experience and I imagine Coach Cut has no plan on changing the style of offense that they have been running. This team is returning Boone, Connette, Snead, Powell, Crowder, McCafferey, Blakeney, Deaver, and the list goes on and on. The offensive weapons are there and bringing in a new coach to overhaul the playbook seems like a pointless move in my opinion.

*Duke OC: Duke will elevate associate head coach Scottie Montgomery to offensive coordinator in replace of now-Florida offensive coordinator Kurt Roper, according to a source.

Montgomery spent three seasons as the Steelers wide receivers coach before joining David Cutcliffe's staff last year.

Playcalling will be a collaborative effort with Cutcliffe and Montgomery.

This makes me a tiny bit nervous. I know it can work and that it probably will work, but head coaches who call the plays spend too much time focused on the offense at the expense of the other two phases of the game. Hopefully, Montgomery handles 90 to 95 percent of the duties with Cutcliffe pitching in 5 to 10 percent of the time.

Overall, I am really excited and optimistic with Montgomery as the OC. Now let's go sign a top notch quarterbacks coach!
