You can watch the game. When they play tomorrow at 3. (According to Guilford College's website.) It says Guilford is playing Southern Virginia now. (You can watch that game, too)

Re: Wolfpackpacerdevil
Friday night's game was the innaugural game for William Peace University Men's Basketball. WPU has a roster of 14 players - 12 freshmen and 2 sophomore transfer studets (neither of the sophomores had ever played a minute of college basketball - they had both walked on to D-I teams, gotten hurt, and never played). Essentially WPU is an all-fresham team. For the first 20 minutes they looked like it. They were sloppy, made bad passes, took unwise shots, and generally looked like a bunch of kids playing against a bunch of grown men. Well, they were a bunch of kids playing against a bunch of grown men. They went into the half down by 15. I don't know what their 26 year old head cocah (who looks all of 19) said or did at the half, but they came out focused and ready to play. In the second half they kept their composure while Johnson and Wasles lost theirs. WPU won by 3 (actually they were up 6 with 1.1 on the clock when J&W hit a meaningless 3-pointer).
Until Sam sufferred a concussion on November 6 he had been working out with the starters. From November 6 until the morning of the game on 11/16 he never practiced. He wasn't cleared to play until late morning on the day of the game. He played about 15 minutes in Friday's game, more than I thought he would given his lack of practice time. He drew the defensive ssignment of thier biggest player, had 2 rebounds, no points, and fouled out with 3 minutes remaining. But, they won their innaugural game.
Saturday's game was a different story. Guilford College is almost always a very strong D-III team (just three years ago they played in the D-III Final Four, and they typically have one or two D-III All-Americans). The jersey's of World B. Free and M. L. Carr hang in the rafters. They are big by D-III standards (3 players over 6'7", one of whom was the height of CB&B and the build of TNTDevil). They would have been competitive with many D-I teams. The game was never even competitive. They went up 10 - 2 by three minutes into the game, and won by 37 (which was kind of what we all knew was going to happen before tip-off). Sam played about 15 minutes in the second game, had 4 or five rebounds, and scored 3 points. His not being able to practice over the last 9 days showed in terms of conditioning, but he worked his ass off against players much bigger, stronger, and more experienced (Guilford started a sophomore, a junior, and three seniors).

Re: Wolfpackpacerdevil
Very cool, thanks for the report. Congrats to Sam and the team for winning their first game! They did something that even Kentucky couldn't do.

Way to go Sam and team. Sounds like Sam did really well after being out of practice over a week. Sam, please don't get hurt any more.

I knew the Peace Pacers' coach when he was a toddler. He and his family went to our church in Raleigh.

He is an incredibly nice guy (even if he is a UNC grad and fan).

Please pass on my congrats to Sam when you next speak with him. He will gain a lot of invaluable experience in these tough early games. The dividends will be paid when he is a junior and senior.allen wrote:Sam played about 15 minutes in the second game, had 4 or five rebounds, and scored 3 points.
