Last night I was accused by a native Floridian who now lives in North Carolina of having a Boston accent!!!!!!

I have never been asked, when in Boston, by a native Bostonian, if I am 'from around here'.

My wife runs into that problem all the time. She has very little of her southern VA accent left (it comes out more when she's visiting and is exposed to it), but people around here always place her as a "southerner". I don't really notice it at all except when we're visiting her family, but there are certain words she uses and in certain ways that I guess give her away.

I've lived in so many places that my accents have basically canceled each other out, though I do use vernacular from almost everywhere I've lived. It's funny, northerners think I'm southern, southerners think I'm northern, east coasters think I'm west coast cause I use dude once in a while, and west coasters think I'm from back east. It's pretty funny, actually. I'd love to meet one of those lingual specialists like that guy in My Fair Lady and see where he/she would place me. Some of those guys can supposedly tell you within a few blocks where you grew up if you're from one of the burroughs of New York.

My freshman year at Duke, I was at a fraternity semi-formal, and the band decided they wanted to play that song, but they needed someone to sing it. Naturally, my drunk, hammy ass obliged. I sang the song in question in front of about 200 people. Nailed it.

Funny discussion should occur now... it came up during our most recent survey.

The truth is, I genuinely have a fun time when Dude (i.e., wilson) dudes me, and I sometimes return the favor. Now that I am truly feeling my age on this trip, the occasional duding makes me feel a little less apprehensive about approaching AARP age.

The Malagasy English major who came with us on the last trip and I were waiting for our guides who were searching for the correct path, when we got into a discussion about terms like "Dude." One of the cultural researchers in the area of Ankarana is known as "Joe Ankarana" (even though his name his something other than "Joe"). When I asked the student as to the meaning of a VERY local phrase of saying hello, he stated that it translated to "Hey, Joe." Apparently, a while ago, the term "Joe" was used as often as the current term "Dude," at least among the teachers of English in Africa. Think about "Joe Six-Pack" and "Joe Cool" (and now, even the corrupted "Joe the Plumber").

I then mentioned "Dude." It seems to fit the same use. I really cannot find a difference. Maybe a matter of 30 years or so.

Question re: Kronenbourg: I distinctly recall it being the cheap stuff in France (I drank it on plenty a Friday afternoon as a 15 year-old ). But here, it clocks in just south of nine bucks for a six-pack.
Does this mean that Busch Light qualifies as premium brew in Europe?

I watched Bastille Day ceremonies while having my yogurt today. Then I watched the Tour de France, and an exciting sprint at the end.

Speaking of dudes...'The Big Lebowski.' I don't get it. I'm really supposed to love it; lots of people whose movie tastes align significantly with mine are mildly obsessed. But I've seen it multiple times, and it just doesn't do a thing for me.
