Trying Something Out for New Users. (ie spammers)

Post by CameronBornAndBred » March 30th, 2012, 3:29 pm

Ok, for the majority of the past year I had setup new user registrations so they had to be approved by me. This was to kill the ever growing number of spammer additions we were getting on a daily basis. So every day I'd check and delete all the new "users", every once in a blue moon finding an actual real person. Those folks of course we approved. Anyways, this process has gotten way worse in the last few weeks. Now we are literally being bombarded with new "users" about every 30 minutes or so. Each one that gets added, I get an email notice about, so my email box becomes obnoxiously full very quickly. I've been doing some research, and have found some solutions that sound ok, but they are old and not really applicable with the current software. I did however find something today that sounds simple for both me and the user, and it's built in! So I've gone back to the old way of user registration, whereas it is done by the person themselves. I've seen three bots come in the time I've done this, and I know they were signing up new accounts and those accounts don't yet exist...so I'm hoping this may actually work. Just an FYI, it doensn't concern any of us since we are already here.

Also an FYI to the spammers....fuck you.

I put a "membership drive" invite on FB today, so that may be a good test. Maybe someone real will join, and the spammers (who are still trying) will continue to fail. :wizard:

Someone real? You mean you want real people with actual personalities and shit joining this place? If that is the case, why the hell did you ever approve EJ and I?

Crazy good job and you're way too modest. We received 47 new requests since midnight, yesterday 90, day before 50.
