While talking to the funeral director today, when he told me the County Medical Examiner charges $52.++ to certify the cause of death before cremation, I told the funeral director to tell the ME to go "fuck himself". The look I got back was priceless! The county also charges $15 for each copy of the Death Certificate. What a ripoff.

I assume you can proceed with cremation with or without this all important "certification"? That certification must be important in the case of a violent death or one with extenuating circumstances that might come up in a court of law? Am I guessing right?
Just the same, it's a bunch of hooey for a grieving family to have to deal with.

Hope you are all doing okay, Oz. Thinking of you daily.

Especially for you, Ozzie, I'm putting on my pointy-toed stiletto heels and sending the 1-2 punch of pointy-toed shin kicks and stiletto heel toe stomps to the CME. For you, rest assured that a constant stream of :ymhug: and :wizard: are headed your way.

I would wonder whether the cause of death certification is needed for any life insurance claims.

But yeah, to charge for that directly seems like a load of BS.

I can't imagine there would be any need in this case to certify the cause of death. I could see if your Dad's passing was because of potential foul play or if he was not under medical care, but this just sounds like a money grab. FWIW, Virginia charges the same for copies of the death certificate.

Continued vibes for you, Ozzie. :ymhug: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :ymhug:

No. They have to wait for the ME to certify that he died of natural causes, because a cremated body can't be exhumed after the fact, just in case questions arise later. There is some move to speed up the process, but it has stalled.

If only he had some life insurance. What little he had was cashed in many years ago for the cash value.

Dad was cremated this afternoon. Guess that makes it real. And final. That's about all I have to say about that.

His love will live on your heart. You'll catch glimpses of his smile in Jennifer's and Ruthie's smiles.
