RIP MDBT Semans

Post by Lavabe » January 25th, 2012, 4:51 pm

Sad news, but I just checked my alumni email, and Mary Duke Biddle Trent Semans died today at age 91.

She was my graduation year's commencement speaker on East Campus (1983). Sad news.

WUNC reran an interview she had with the station back in 2003, last night. A truly fascinating woman.

If you have an hour and 25 minutes, you can watch the replay of the funeral service here: http://www.wral.com/news/video/10663712/#/vid10663712

It will be time well spent.

Mary's service was awesome! Mary would have loved it! The music, the speakers, the flowers, the reception!

You can watch the entire Service.......... on duke.edu (about 2 hours, because it shows everyone entering the Chapel before the service, and switches camera angles throughtout the service).

As a descendant of Artelia Roney Duke (Washington Duke's wife, the Mother of Mary, JB(Buc) and Ben), the memorial service, meant so much to me with remembering family and the generations before us. Artelia was from Haw River, and she is buried in the Haw River Cemetary (Trolinger cemetary). It has the same stone around it, as Duke East Campus.

It is so wonderful that the RONEY FOUNTAIN, that was on East Campus, that hadn't worked in many years, was moved and restored, and is beautiful in the center of the Rose Garden, at the Sarah P Duke Gardens. Mary Duke Biddle Trent Semans, was there for the rededication of the Roney Fountain, last year.

Mary Duke Biddle Trent Semans will live forever through all of her work and love she showed to others, her community, her State, and Her DUKE University!
