My task for the weekend: filling out the online application for the UTMB-Galveston job "so I can be brought in for an interview." Don't you just love it when you are told to fill out an application so that you can be interviewed?

Just finished filling out the online application. Hopefully this will lead to an interview!

Found out today that a coworker is having surgery next week and will be out for 2-6 weeks. My boss would blow a gasket if this job comes through and I leave while my coworker is out (assuming the longer sick leave, which I hope she doesn't need). Job interview while she's out would freak him out a bit, too.

A bad week at work (is it really only Tuesday?!?) prompted me to take a serious look at open positions within the 'borg. There are about 5 posted in the past month that caught my eye. Two of them are on teams where I've worked with at least one other person, so now I have two informational interviews set up - Thurs. & Friday.

I wasn't intending to look for a new gig upon coming back from maternity leave, so I'm not sure how to feel about the suddenness of such potentially big changes, but at the same time, I don't feel I should let these opportunities pass by. If I do think one of the spots is right for me, and I get through to a full interview loop, I'll have to tell my current management about it. When I do that, it'll pretty much be a, "well since you want to leave, get gone" sort of situation, so I need to be pretty confident at least one of them's going to pan out, before taking the plunge.

Here's hoping I can keep all the balls juggled successfully - current job, family, plus job-hunting & interviewing! Oh, and the MIL is in town this weekend. Joy.

There are many college educated professionals that are unemployed and underemployed now. I have many friends In North Carolina, that have lost their jobs, benefits, retirement, due to downsizing and capsizing, myself included. The constant job search online and networking will completely stress you out and depress you beyond your control.

I read online last week, if you are over 40 years old, you will be unemployed longer than someone in their 20s or 30s. There are more college educated unemployed/underemployed working in the Hospitiality and Retail industry than ever before. Alot of people are working 2 and 3 part time jobs just to pay their immediate bills (rent, mortgage, utilities, car and insurance, groceries and gas).

So if you know of someone that has lost their job, and there are so many in the USA, reach out to them and offer to take them out for lunch or dinner, or invite them to a GAME. Those are luxuries, and NOT in their budget. And be kind to them, and try to uplift their spirits. It is very depressing to send out resumes week after week, and get little to NO response. If you have a job with benefits, hang onto it, until, you can get something better.

Yeah tell me about it! I am finishing off the program I switched into after jumping ship from my PhD program and have been applying for jobs for a little while now with no luck. Out of the last 150 jobs (approximately) I applied for I was called in for one interview - and during that interview I was told that I was overqualified! Did she not see my experience and my Master's degree on my resume before she called me in?!?!?!?

If I could afford to move somewhere else to find a job I would but I can't and am stuck here. Hell, I would move to another country but the only one I would move to is in worse economic shape than we are so that rules that out.

It really does suck out there right now. If we nosedive into another recession I have no idea what I am going to do. Thank God we have free health care up here as both of my knees are a mess right now and my family doctor fully expects the specialist I see in a couple of weeks to decide to operate on them. If it weren't for our health care system there is no way I could afford to have those surgeries done or even to see the specialist.
