I saw this one today:

"A word to the wise ain't necessary - it's the stupid ones who need the advice."

Bill Cosby

I just always wondered why my teachers would preface some of their remarks with "And now, a word to the wise. . ." I always thought that if we were wise enough, we wouldn't need that little nugget coming from the teacher.

And another teacher phrase that always drove me nuts was my Algebra teacher's telling us, "Same difference." How can something that's different be the same? Or how can something that is the same be different? The terms, by their very definitions, contradicted each other. I remember working so hard to try to understand the concept of "same difference."

Never thought of it that way. I guess that's similar to when a person asks, "may I ask a question?" What are you supposed to say, "no", or the smart alec response, "you just did". Given some time, I could think of a few other situations.

One of the things I want to do is to include inspirational quotes when I send out weekly reminder emails. Please post your favorite quotes, and please include authors name.

Thanks!

If you send the emails out on Fridays you could always steal from the engineering program at my undergrad institution. They have a pub called POETS which stands for Piss On Everything Tomorrow's Saturday. Try including that in your emails!

I also find Cheers to be very inspirational. Again, most appropriate for Fridays.

I'm betting those weren't the types of quotes you were looking for but I didn't have anything else to contribute...

Oh interesting, I never thought of it as in "different," difference, I thought of it as in, 10-6=4, and 8-4=4, both have the same difference.

I pretty much find most stanzas of the Desiderata to be quotable - http://www.fleurdelis.com/desiderata.htm

but the one I keep in mind most is:
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

That is true, but to my 13 year old brain, a teacher's saying "same difference" was mind boggling, and I had to focus so hard on the math lesson in order not to mentally wander away to the land of oxymorons.

Sort of like "Hot water heater". Why is there a need to heat hot water? Why not just call it a water heater? 8-} :-?

"He draws pictures on the radio. He says it makes the songs look better." Widespread Panic

This can be bent into an optimistic and inspirational thought...
