SEC expansion

Since this covers both basketball and football, I'm just gonna post it here. Texas A&M is a definite to the SEC. The SEC also says they want FSU, Clemson and Missouri. FSU has said they haven't talked to anyone, but there is no report about Clemson's thoughts one way or the other.

I am not sure FSU wants to be in the same conference with Florida...although it would raise that rivalry to Duke/Carolina Michigan/OSU caliber.

Clenson? Are they nuts? The would get slaughtered in football and basketball on a regular basis.

While A&M has football traditions which would fit in the SEC, I'm having trouble seeing this as a good fit.

Missouri seems like the better bet, no SEC presence there. What I think is interesting is how they are disparaging the proximity of other schools. What is the first thing they mention when the pundits talk about the Duke/unc rivalry? "And these two schools are just x miles apart." Plus we have State and Wake within a short drive. Obviously that formula can work, but then again, none of those schools sells out a 75000 seat football stadium either. But FSU can, and does. And regardless of if they are in the SEC or ACC, they are still rivals with Florida and competition for dollars; it's not like they haven't already been there. Clemson would make less sense, they can't even win in the ACC; they'll get their ass kicked in the SEC.

There's a bit of a rivalry between Mizzou and Arkansas, but it's not huge. It would likely grow if they were in the same conference. The Hogs' big rivalry game now is LSU, but it really wasn't a rivalry until the Hogs joined the SEC.

I've always thought of Missouri as more of a midwestern state than a southeastern state. In the era of the megaconference, though, geography doesn't seem to matter.

ETA: Is there any advantage to the SEC to have the big rivalry games like Florida-FSU and South Carolina-Clemson as conference games rather than out-of-conference games? Does the revenue pool get split any differently? After all, we know expansion is all about $$$$$.

Now...this will be fun to see how A&M handles this, and the rest of their conference mates react. Two years in a row, they looked at bolting the Big 12, and this year they flat out stated they wanted to leave for the SEC. Now they are stuck back home. Talk about feeling like the ugly stepkid.

Now...this will be fun to see how A&M handles this, and the rest of their conference mates react. Two years in a row, they looked at bolting the Big 12, and this year they flat out stated they wanted to leave for the SEC. Now they are stuck back home. Talk about feeling like the ugly stepkid.

I can't say I really blame A&M. As long as they are in the same conference as Texas, they'll always be second fiddle. And with the new 'Longhorn Sports Network', they'd make a helluva lot more off the SEC tv deal then they ever will in the Big 12 (or whatever it is now).

I've read a number of theories around this - some are in the linked ESPN article (needing a 14th team). But another that stated the SEC wanted A&M to go ahead and pull out of the Big 12 and once they did they'd get an invite - that way the SEC might avoid being sued for tampering by the Big 12.

I don't think I'll like super conferences, at least on the basketball side. Especially because, as it appears right now, the ACC would end up being one of the conferences that just disappears.
