Re: Ymm, Beer!

Stone Double Bastard..What a beer. Pours dark amber..Lots and lots of malt and hops. The hops dominate as there is a bitterness from start to finish but the undercurrent of sweet malts balances it well...very crisp and drinkable..especially for 10%. It's weight reminded me a lot of some barleywines ...

Re: Ymm, Beer!

http://www.beeraday.net/ This guy might be a genius, or he might just be a high-functioning alcoholic. Or both. Nonetheless, he has set out to drink a different beer every day of 2009 and post thoughts on them. It's a bit behind schedule right now, but an interesting read. I must say I am a little ...

Re: Ymm, Beer!

Oskar Blues--anyone try this brewery? They can their beers but seem well reviewed... I've seen their Ten Fidy Stout at a few places and have been intrigued. Today I was at a different store and ended up picking up a 4 pack of cans of their Gordon double IPA... I also managed to find a bomber of Doub...

Re: Ymm, Beer!

Victory Golden Monkey Tripel--I am a big fan of Victory--Old horizontal is probably my favorite barley wine and I really like their double IPA (Hop Wallop) and stout (Storm King), so I was excited to try this. It's a decent tripel though I wouldn't put it in the same class as the above. Pours a fair...

Re: Ymm, Beer!

I may go back and pick up the Heavy Seas sampler to try some of the others... Good idea, you will be happy. Their Pils is great, (Uber Pils I think) and I'm not a pilsner person. I still wish the sampler had the barley wine included but it did seem like a good mix..and at 90 degrees up here in Bost...

Sure is..Especially ones where you can buy a 6 pack of good beer for the price of a bomber of some other brewers...

Re: Ymm, Beer!

Clipper City Holy Sheet Abbey Ale..Pours a very dark reddish brown. I used my Chimay goblet for effect. I was sort of expecting something similar to Ommegang but taste was far different from other American or even Belgium versions. Lots of sweet fruity notes but it also had a tart funky bite to it e...

Re: Ymm, Beer!

To bluebear from above as I could not embed 3 quotes: 1. We await your thoughts on the Holy Sheet as CB&B and I have reviewed it recently. They have 7 brews IIRC in their Heavy Seas series and I have not had the barleywine, the weizen bock and 1 other I cannot recall at this time. 2. Haven't had a ...

Re: Ymm, Beer!

I'm sure I've reviewed it before, but it's a fun beer and I'll review it again. Founder's Dirty Bastard. It's a scotch ale, distinguished by it's brown color and coffee tinges. It's strong for a dark ale, in a blind test you might think you were drinking a high octane stout. Held up to the late, th...

Re: Ymm, Beer!

Hey, CB&B, ya want one saved? Also, if they still have the SA Imperial Pilsner, do you want a 4 pack or part of one? I've had the Imperial Bock and can get it regularly, but I've yet to find the pils, so yes to that one. Agreement on your bock review. Bluebear penned a good review on the SA IB on T...

Re: Ymm, Beer!

I'm not sure how a beer in which the malt trumps the hops can be called a barleywine. Nonetheless, sounds intriguing. Where is it from? Agree..there is not much barleywine about this beer..apparently, older versions were considered strong ales. The brewery is out in Western MA and despite being in ...

Re: Ymm, Beer!

Berkshire Brewing Company Raspberry Barleywine--not quite sure what to make of this beer. There is obviously a strong raspberry taste thought its not overwhelming. It's hard to really consider this a barleywine, as its pretty thin all around. Not a lot of strong taste beyond the raspberries but malt...

Re: Ymm, Beer!

I've tried a handful of wee heavies/scotch ales over the past month. The best so far has been Alesmith Wee Heavy. Last night, I had a Skull Splitter from Orkney Brewery in Scotland. Very good beer. Very malty and fairly sweet but not overpowering. Some sweeter malty beers tend to be hard to drink be...

Re: Ymm, Beer!

I did invite bluebear, who posts occasionally on the OTB about beer, in addition to ohioguy2 and SlimSlowSlider who have not posted in a while about their tastings. I'm here too..thanks again for the invite..just ran through the thread so far and looks like some great reviews. Looking forward to co...
