Re: Ymm, Beer!

Left Hand Oak Aged Widdershins---barleywine. Pours a ruby brown with almost no head. Fairly malty but not too sweet. Could be the oak, but the malts have a bit more of a smokiness to them than expected. There is some piney hop bitterness but it's fairly subtle and balanced well. Dry booziness in the...

Re: Ymm, Beer!

We stopped in the Berkshires (Red Lion Inn) on our way back from Boston. For lunch I tried a couple of the Birkshire Brewing Co's products--it was a tavern, what should I drink?.The Steel Rail was a good beer, the Coffee House Porter a very good beer. Someone else said their Seasonal Christmas beer...

Re: Ymm, Beer!

Alesmith Grand Cru---A belgian strong dark ale. Deep brown pour with a decent size head. Heavy and dense with lots of sweet malts blended well with strong cherry, plum and other fruit tastes. There is some yeast but more subtle than other similar beers. A slight sourness in the finish. This reminds ...

Re: Ymm, Beer!

Victory Yakima Twilight--I think this falls into the double IPA category though a bit of a unique take on it...Pours a reddish brown. Decent hop punch up front with lots of pine and citrus. The hops are balanced well (perhaps even overbalanced for the style) by a good malt presence but the malts are...

Re: Ymm, Beer!

In honor of brewing a darker ale, but not porter dark, I'm reviewing North Coast's Old Stock Ale (2007). This is a trader from DD. Right up front you know the ABV is over 10%, it actually checks in at 11.7. Nice light brown color, very fruity and up there on IBU's. I'd guess 80+. The bitterness and...

Re: Ymm, Beer!

Founders Backwoods Bastard. Bourbon barrel aged version of Dirty Bastard...Pours a very dense brown red. There are pretty noticeable hints of vanilla and caramel malts but this beer is really about one thing...bourbon. I've had a few different beers aged in whiskey barrels but none that picked up so...

Re: Ymm, Beer!

So what's everyone drinking for turkey day? For the main course, I'll have both New Belgium Frambozen and Avery Salvation (unless I can find a different Belgian Golden at the liquor store to try). For dessert, there will be Old Ruffian Barleywine by Great Divide (for those skipping pie and looking ...

Re: Ymm, Beer!

Sam Adams Old World Tripel...Part of their barrel aged series---This could be the best SA beer I've had. Pours a a nice cloudy golden yellow. Big fruity taste up front with lots of banana and pineapple. Mild spiciness and an appropriate amount of booziness for a tripel. Fairly heavy on the yeast but...

Re: Ymm, Beer!

Speaking of Sam Adams, I've had a string of SA beers lately. I had some less than creative beer drinkers over to watch football on Sunday and picked up the SA winter sampler. I grabbed the sampler mainly knowing that my guests would be happy with SA Lager or Winter Lager and that I could enjoy the H...

Re: Ymm, Beer!

Sam Adams Hallertau Imperial Pilsner Thanks Devildeac! All good beers are poured in glasses; what catches you first for the IP is that it pours so pretty. Like a fine syrup, it pours quick but with plenty of body, miniscule bubbles in multitude rise to the surface to create a beautiful soft, light ...

Re: Ymm, Beer!

Old Stock Ale 2007-North Coast Brewing-Delicious. I found a guy stocking the shelf at Total Wine with this and was amazed to see the 2007 on the neck of the bottle. I laughed and made a comment about the age and he said it should be ready to drink now and I disagreed and said maybe another year :ro...

Re: Ymm, Beer!

Sierra Nevada/Dogfish Head Life and Limb... 24 ounce bottle with probably the best label I have seen... http://www.life-limb.com/ How do they get the fish to swim back and forth on the label? Are they perhaps swimming in the beer inside the bottle? =)) =)) =)) =)) =)) After a few of these, at 10%, ...

Sierra Nevada/Dogfish Head Life and Limb...Was extremely fortunate to get a bottle of this as my local store received a whopping 6 bottles of it. Not sure what availability is elsewhere but very limited up here in MA. 24 ounce bottle with probably the best label I have seen... http://www.life-limb.c...

Re: Ymm, Beer!

The Brunchgate winner: Victory 12. Not only was this uncaged and uncorked to celebrate the 40th for CB&B but 8-x was nice enough to bring it and CB&B was generous enough to share it with the crowd. I guess the best way to describe this is an imperial amber ale crossed with a triple. Note to rmd: Th...

Re: Ymm, Beer!

Allagash Hugh Malone-I'm glad CB&B resisted the temptation to consume this at home and brought it back to Brunchgate. Tough to characterize this one. Allagash pretty much brews only Belgian style ales and I'd probably say this is a hybrid between an IPA and a triple with lots of Simcoe and Warrior ...
