Re: Olympic Thread
colchar's response is exactly why I love CTN. Many thanks, colchar. I still hope you lose at the Brickyard, tomorrow. ;) Now that I am feeling better and am thinking more clearly, I should point out that the cellular phone/modern love story thing was also a tribute to Tim Berners Lee who invented t...

Re: Olympic Thread
My favorite scene from the opening ceremony was seeing Grant Hill with Michelle Obama. I didn't see Grant and Mrs. Obama was only on for a split second (our coverage focused on the ceremony with very little commentary and it only cut away for commercials). Why would Grant have been with her? Becaus...

Re: Olympic Thread
Well, hello? He looked like he was playing Abraham Lincoln. Of course people thought he was playing Abraham Lincoln. Brunel was born before and died before Lincoln (although they did live at the same time). My favorite part of the show was when the queen parachuted in to the stadium. Sadly, some pe...

Re: Olympic Thread
On NBC did they show the film sequence that started off the ceremony? I mean the one that started at the source of the Thames and then went along the river. The first Pink Floyd reference was in that when they showed the Pink Floyd pig floating above Battersea Power Station as was done for the cover...

Re: Olympic Thread
Second attempt at a reply to colchar. User error :)) I did not intend to suggest that Jerusalem is an official or national anthem. I married a choral singer, and used the term ANTHEM as, at least in the US, the term is defined with more religious Connotations. OED, however, does not emphasize these...

Here is a portion of the ceremony that was deleted (censored?) by NBC:

There were a few enjoyable moments (my vote for Mr. Bean again), but it wasn't all that entertaining on TV. Perhaps in the stadium or on drugs would have worked better. Then again an awkward, insular presentation might just be representative of the modern UK.

Re: Olympic Thread
Top three opening ceremony moments for me were: 1) Boy singing the British anthem "Jerusalem" It is not a British anthem, it is an English one and it isn't even an official anthem. The Kenneth Branagh character... Weird! Love his reading of Tempest, but walking around in tall hat ...? Do you (or an...

Re: Peach Dessert
I voted other because I do not like peach desserts. My Mum does make a homemade peach jam though that is absolutely sensational. Every time I am there I return one empty jar and take a new one with me. Luckily for me, she makes a year or two's supply at a time.

Re: NASCAR 2012
All hail the new leader, COLCHAR!! Colchar had a MASSIVE win this week, with a 30 pt win over Tilly. He now leads Ymo by 45 pts. I am 39 pts. further back, about 110 pts ahead of Iowa. Lawgrad is another 140 pts back, 63 pts ahead of Tilly, who is 43 pts ahead of Miles, who is 110 pts ahead of knig...

If Jr. wins this thing I am going to be mightily pissed off that I left him on the bench.

I think I got a much needed win today but the standings haven't been updated yet (it says they will be tomorrow...I guess because of the start of the new session) so I am not 100% certain.

You and me both. Had I started him I would have had him in 1st and Biff in 4th as my B-list drivers.
