Optical Character Recognition Software

Post by colchar » April 18th, 2009, 2:23 pm

I was wondering if anyone here had any experience with optical character recognition software? While on my major research trip last year I took 18,566 images of primary documents (some are single pages, some are double pages). What I would like to be able to do is to convert these to Word files for easier manipulation of the text. I have tried some of the online versions of this type of software and a couple of free ones but the results were disappointing to say the least. Has anyone here used this kind of software and, if so, can you recommend any good programs? I'd like to know as much about the various programs before I lay out any money buying the stuff.
