Re: Vibes for DukeUsul (Welcome Jack!)
We're settling in at home and in those early days of little sleep. Jack is a lot of fun though. I'm continually amazed at how much he looks like his sister, but is still very different in personality, even at such a young age. Thanks! Due date is today. Lisa's been off of work for a week and is going stir crazy. She's had some mild contractions on and off, but we're not there yet. Let's hope it happens soon!

Re: Don't Buy Me Some Peanuts and Cracker Jack
In addition to differences in how we diagnose these things today, I think there are also real environmental factors at play. I'm a believer in the hygiene hypothesis for where allergies come from: some allergies are developed due to lack of exposure in our youth. If our kids aren't exposed to potent...

Can't take credit for the name, after Mrs. Turk found out my standard medley of lullabies included such classics as "Badlands", "My Hometown", "Clampdown", "Friend of the Devil", "Open Letter to a Landlord", "Wreck on the Highway", etc. She figured out we'd be saving on shrink bills in the long run...

Re: July 4th Holiday Plans
I grew up spending my summers on Cape Cod. We always knew when it was August, because the water hit about 65 then. My in-laws had/have a second home on the Cape. They would take us around to a protected bay for swimming in August. The sun warmed that water so that it was bearable. :9f: :animals-pen...

Re: July 4th Holiday Plans
Long weekend in Little Egg Harbor NJ. This time I'll try not to slice my foot open on anything in the bay. How can you stand to be in that cold water anyway? If it's north of Hatteras, it's too cold for me to be at the beach. **== Have fun with Katie! :9f: I grew up spending my summers on Cape Cod....

Where's the option for "I hate ketchup?"
Also - malt vinegar. Yum.
Bojangle's cajun seasoning. I miss it so bad!

Thank you everyone! It sure is great being back around family on my birthday. I went out to lunch with my parents and then left Katie with Lisa's parents last night so that Lisa and I could go out to dinner. It was a good day!

BTW, DevilWearsPrada only needs another half dozen (or so) positive comments before she gets back to even and is no longer considered a troll (or worse) by there system, so please everyone go give her a positive comment! Re: an interesting dilemma...
I've seen that among some parents of students, medical degrees are valued highest. PhDs are viewed as a lower degree, something to get when you can't get an MD. I have experienced that as well. This attitude was prevalent at my undergraduate institution - not among the faculty members, but among ot...

Re: Duke's Graduation Weekend
What do the hoods or stoles that the Duke undergraduates are wearing signify? I inquire because back in the stone age, only those who earned graduate degrees were allowed to wear academic hoods. Those earning bachelor's degrees could only wear the black robes and caps. The engineering graduates got...

Re: Statler and Waldorf and CathyCA (aka The Snark Thread)
OMG! I do sooooooooooooooooo remember the first time that one of my kids (finally) made the honor roll at school and I got to put one of those "My child is an honor student at Allen School" bumper stickers on my car. You all cannot believe how thrilled and relieved I was. I'm certain that my reacti...
